Brush McCoy Pottery Onyx Glaze Decanter Brown Jug Working Music Box
Great condition. No chips or cracks. Original cap with cork stopper. Music box in working order. Measures 10" high x 6 1/2" wide. Lovely onyx glaze over brown glaze. Music box mechanism is Swiss. Music only plays when jug is lifted off a flat surface. The trip wire from the bottom of the jug is released, and the music box can be wound and will play. See details in description.
When I got this piece, the music box was not working. I removed the mechanism and lubricated it with Alum-a-Lub and it started right up. I have wound the mechanism and tested the trip wire that starts and stops the music. All are working great. The music box mechanism is marked SWISS. Something that is really cool, is that the pottery jug acts as a magnifier for the music box. The music sounds richer when it is in its place in the base of the pottery piece. There is no agreement in this house what song is on the music box. Perhaps it is "
    How Dry I Am
    "?
I also enjoyed reading about the glaze technique online. It ceased to be used in the late 30s presumably because the onyx minerals were needed for the looming war effort.
