I just purchased this vintage James C. Powers bird wood carving from a local estate here in Central Virginia. I believe Powers was a Tennessee carver, Cattanooga based, some other of his carvings were retailed at Creative Crafts there. This piece shows a Mockingbird perched on a driftwood log. The bird is well executed with nice detail to the head features, wing plumage and tail. The hand painting shows rich color and fine line. The piece measures 11" long at the base (the bird itself is 8 ½"), 7 ½" wide and 6 ½" high. The base is hand signed in ink script "James C. Powers". The piece is in very good condition with the only issue being a tiny nick on the outside edge of the tail feathers (pictured). A slight line at the juncture of one of the metal legs (production). This striking Powers Mockingbird would make a nice addition to your collection of vintage American bird carvings / folk art.
