Description
Set of Three (3) Antique Brass Gold Weights from the Akan peoples of The Gold Coast. The figures, with clearly defined features and varied actions and expressions, indicate that these gold weights are from the 18th to19th century ("Late Period") gold trade in Ghana, the "Gold Coast" of West Africa. From 1400 AD to late 1700 AD geometric weights were the norm, while figurative forms (people, animals, buildings) were from the later period. The weights were made using the "lost wax" method. Each figure is different, uniquely made by the artisan. The figures are 2" - 2 1/2" tall, which is typical for these kinds of gold weights. The images and situations depicted by the weights are closely tied to the people and cultural actions of the society. I got these gold weights in the late 1970s when visiting the area.*3 figures you receive may vary from ones shown as each is unique; please contact me for more detail on exact ones.
