Description
Up for auction is an excellent, glasseyeMallard
Drake produced by the Dodge factory in Detroit most likely during the
transitional period when the Mason factory was in the process of taking over production. The body form and, in particular, the paint share characteristics of both makers -- the result of the blending of Dodge and Mason production facilities and individual artisans. It is ca. 1890s. See the book, "Detroit Decoy Dynasty" to learn more about this transitional period and for similar examples. This decoy is in
wonderful original paint covered with a very light coat of varnish. Note the great bill carving and bold feather loops on the body. The
decoy shows some relatively minor wear from use including rubs to the edges of the bill, head, and end of the tail.
There is a shot scar on the back and the neck filler looks to have been partially replaced, while a bit of the original is missing. There is a small round spot on the breast that looks to have been an in the making flaw. This sucker is very heavy with a large inletted lead weight on the bottom that must be very deeply imbedded. This thing will right itself from anywhere! Measures 16-1/2” long; 5-3/4” wide; and 6-3/4" tall. Please ask questions or for more photos. Shipping includes insurance and is higher outside of the USA. Thanks for looking.
